Constructed in the classic Ming style with scrolled ends and beautifully carved panels, this elegant altar table perfectly suits a corridor or living room. Small carved peaches have been patched into the top of this piece. Peaches have long history in Chinese culture representing luck and prosperity, likely beginning in the story of a fisherman by Tao Qian (365-427) who found endless bliss in a peach orchard hidden within a crevice.
Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well-being of the household. They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.
